Working from Home

Most people out there that are reading this have decided to work from home. And alot of people are thinking about taking the plunge to work from home. There are different reasons for wanting to work from home, maybe you don't like your commute, maybe the office gossip is getting to you or maybe you physically don't want/can't do the work anymore. For me I didn't want the commute any longer, I didn't want to hear the gossip and most importantly I wanted to spend more time with my family. The ky to this is DISCIPLINE! We must not forget that working from home is just that WORK!

Interruptions happen and that's a fact of life. You get up to use the restroom and you see laundry that needs washed. In my case you get up to let the dogs out and maybe there are a few dishes that need done. Or the phone rings and its a fmaily member and they feel like talking. These are all distractions and the reality is that they take time away from you doing your work. You may not think of them as taking a lot of time away but think about this, how long does it take you after you do these things to get back into the swing of things?

So you see it does take discipline, but not only from you, it takes discipline from your friends and family too. Running to the store real quick, having people stop over and visit all take time away from your work. This means it takes time away from your customers and your team. Too much time away from either of them may end up in you searching the classifieds once again to find a new job.

Anyone that works or wants to work from home should devote a specific amount of time to devote to their work. Working from home you will have more freedom so this can be alterred daily if you so choose. But the distractions have to be limited during the times you have set aside for work. Remember your customers and team in need of help don't really care that you needed to do some laundry, all they know is that they needed you and you were not there for support. Whatever time commitment you make especially to your customers and team need to be kept.

When I first started working from home I thought "geesh" this is taking way more time than what I was told. Initially I thought that I was lied too but then I realized I didn't have a plan of attack so to speak or a gameplan. I developed the attitude that I used when I worked somewhere else, you know when you are not home some things have to wait until you get home to do them. So I prioritized my daily activities and my work. There are certain things that really bother me like dirty dishes so I knew that for me to be able to devote my full attention to my work that I would first need to handle the dishes. Now part of my day starts with drinking my coffee and doing the dishes and then my work day starts.

I am not saying that you need a maid or anything like that but you have to realize that whatever time you set aside to work that you stick to it. It may take a little time to figure out exactly when is the best for you to work but flexibilty is one of the biggest perks in working from home!
